Open Mat gives Journey Jiu Jitsu members dedicated time to train independently. There is no formal class structure, so you can use the session to practise techniques from your regular classes, work on specific positions, or get some extra rounds in.

Our Open Mat sessions are available for both Gi and No-Gi training.

Open Mat is suitable for Journey Jiu Jitsu students who want extra training time outside their regular classes.

It can be useful for students who want to:

  • Build confidence through extra mat time

    Visitors: $20 per session.

Open Mat works best when everyone trains safely and respectfully.

  • Respect your training partners.
  • Control your intensity.
  • Tap early and respect the tap.
  • Keep the mats clean.
  • Give others space to train.
  • Ask before starting a roll.
  • Follow coach instructions when required.

Open Mat is generally best suited to students who have already attended regular BJJ classes and understand basic training and rolling etiquette.

Yes. Our Open Mat sessions can include both Gi and No-Gi training.

For Gi Open Mat, bring your Gi and usual training gear.

For No-Gi Open Mat, wear a rashguard or athletic shirt and suitable training shorts without zippers or buttons.
